Ruud van Nistelrooy changed formation from four at the back to a three-man defence in Leicester City’s last two league games against Chelsea and Manchester United.
The Foxes manager left Jannik Vestergaard out of the squad for these two fixtures, but his omission didn’t impact his place with Denmark.
However, Tipsbladet state the Leicester player is unlikely to join the national team camp full of confidence.
The centre-back’s last appearance for the Premier League club was in their 2-0 defeat to West Ham United on February 27th, where he scored an own goal. He started losing his place at the King Power Stadium under the Dutchman’s orders in recent weeks.
Vestergaard made only one start in Leicester’s last five league matches and didn’t feature in three of them.
Van Nisterlooy’s decision to ostracise the 32-year-old hasn’t stopped Denmark manager Brian Riemer from including him in the squad for this international break. He claims it would be better if his players were in form.
Riemer states a compromise has to be made to accommodate those players who aren’t enjoying regular minutes at their respective clubs.
“I’m thinking what every national coach would think, and that is that I hope everyone plays. My goal is to select as many in-form players as possible, and sometimes there may be situations where you have to compromise on one or two things,” he said.
“The good thing is that if you look over a longer period than two games, Jannik has played, so we don’t get a player who hasn’t started in five months. But if you ask me if I had hoped he had played these games and come in with top form, then of course I did.”
Vestergaard has made 19 appearances for Leicester City this season.
