One Chelsea star who has been out-of-form recently has been defended by former England international. He gave the valid reason behind dip in the form of the Blues star.
The Chelsea star in question here is Christopher Nkunku. He joined the Blues in summer 2023 but was haunted by injuries in his first season. Nkunku ended up playing just 14 games last season. He has managed to stay fit this time, but is not the first-choice player for Enzo Maresca.

Paul Merson explains why Nkunku is underperforming at Chelsea
Arsenal legend Paul Merson defended Nkunku while speaking to Sky Sports, despite his dip in the form. The former England international gave valid reasons which may also suggest that Nkunku may depart from the West London this summer.
“Christopher Nkunku’s position is not on the wing. I feel sorry for him. I like him, I think he’s a good player. He’s one that plays behind the centre-forward” – Merson on why Nkunku is underperforming.
Nkuku was being used by Enzo Maresca as second-choice striker at first. The 27 year old did a decent job in his unnatural position. Now, he’s been given a job pf playing on the wing. This is making hard for Nkunku to have impact on the pitch.
“He’s an intelligent footballer, connects things, but the problem is Palmer’s been outstanding. I don’t think Chelsea were foreseeing Palmer as good as what he was hence why they bought Nkunku for a lot of money” – Merson on why Nkunku is not playing as attacking midfielder.
Nkunku wanted to leave Chelsea in January window. But, the deal failed due to the transfer fee demanded by the Blues. However, it looks very likely that the 27 year old may depart from West London this summer. Bayern Munich were showing interest in January and may once again reignite their interest in summer.
