Dan Burn called Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool a dream after scoring in the 2-1 victory at Wembley, just two days after receiving his first England call-up at the age of 32.
“I’ve had worse weeks,” Burn said. “I don’t want to go to sleep because I feel like I’m dreaming and it’s all going to be a lie.”
The defender, who grew up just 15 miles from Newcastle, was unmarked from a corner and took advantage of Liverpool’s zonal marking to head in the opener before Alexander Isak doubled the lead against the Reds on Sunday’s final.
It capped off a remarkable few days for Burn, whose career once saw him working in a supermarket while playing in non-league football before he not only arrived at NUFC but helped the team become immortal winning their first chip in 70 years and clinching a spot in England’s senior squad for the first time in his career.
“I feel strange, I feel numb at the minute,” Burn said. “I knew Alexis [Mac Allister] wasn’t looking at the ball and I’d be able to get a jump on him. I don’t get many so I saved it for a big occasion.”
Eddie Howe on Dan Burn's England call-up:
"Incredible moment for Dan, there is no one more deserving in my opinion. Such an inspiring guy and a talented player, it is a great football story, Dan has had to do it the hard way coming through the leagues. He is the model… pic.twitter.com/lExBdddAyV

Eddie Howe praised Burn’s contribution, both in the final and throughout the club’s rise in recent years.
“What a week for him. His performance today, he was colossal for us at the back,” Howe said. “His goal—we have been working on those corners for two weeks and had mixed success, but he has delivered one. An incredible header.”
Burn, now preparing to report to England camp under new manager Thomas Tuchel, made it clear he wouldn’t let the celebrations delay his international debut.
“Tomorrow morning, I’ll be first there at 8 o’clock,” Burn said.
