Newcastle United won their first trophy in 70 years when they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
Dan Burn opened the scoring for the Magpies in the first half and Alexander Isak doubled the lead in the 52nd minute. Federico Chiesa netted a late goal for Liverpool, but it wasn’t enough for them to avoid defeat.
Isak has joined the Sweden camp for the ongoing international break. The striker had a chat with Viaplay to discuss Newcastle’s latest success and Tuesday’s Svenska Dagbladet have relayed his comments.
The 25-year-old’s goal at Wembley proved to be the difference between Newcastle and the Reds in the end. He scored a goal each against Chelsea and Arsenal in the previous rounds of the EFL Cup.
On his goal against Liverpool, he said: “It was a great moment.”
The former Real Sociedad man has been telling everyone why Newcastle’s EFL Cup success is special.
“It’s fantastic. The club has been waiting for this for 70 years and it feels incredible,” Isak explained.
“It means everything. I’ve been at this club for a few years now, built relationships, and I think these players deserve this. And the fans, they’ve been fantastic.”
Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has praised the Newcastle star for his role in helping the Premier League club end their long trophy drought.
“In my opinion, he is the best striker in the Premier League. He should be proud of the moment. It’s special to score in a final and also win a title… a big moment,” he added.
Isak has scored 23 goals and registered five assists from 32 games for Newcastle United this season.
