Ending the 70-year wait without domestic silverware sparked jubilant scenes across London, Tyneside and beyond as Toon supporters celebrated long into the night. Local hero Dan Burn and Alexander Isak bagged the goals as the Magpies put Liverpool to the sword in convincing fashion.
Howe did what many before him - including club icons - could not by finally getting Newcastle over the line. A total of 27 men have been permanent managers at St James’ Park since Doug Livingstone’s side lifted the 1955 FA Cup.

All had failed to lift a domestic honour but Howe triumphed at Wembley to banish the trophy demons for good. Speaking to talkSPORT, former Toon boss Pardew - who led Newcastle to the League Cup and Europa League quarter-finals during his four-year reign - highlighted Howe’ achievement.
“It’s not often you get to a final and deserve and play well and win,” he said. “Sometimes you’re in it and it’s tight but they thoroughly deserved it. Great tactics from the boy and he’s now immortal, Mr Eddie Howe.
“(Newcastle’s trophy drought) goes back generations, to share that with your family and for everybody, going from my time at Newcastle, the passion and the love from the football club comes through in almost everybody you meet. The responsibility (of being Newcastle manager) is enormous because of the pressure you’re under.
“Obviously, the trophy thing, I remember when we got to the quarter-finals of the Europa League and the pressure that was on us to break that hoodoo was a bit like what Eddie had to do two years ago but they dealt with it so much better.
“The tactics today were spot on. They didn’t try to be clever. I speak, not just for myself, but I’m sure Graeme Souness, Sam Allardyce, Chris Hughton, John Carver, Steve McClaren, Rafa Benitez, Steve Bruce and myself, we all send our congratulations to Eddie Howe.
“He’s done something none of us could do. And I know you can argue the finances and everything else, but you’ve still got to secure it. He’s come through difficult spells and won the trophy. I’m delighted for him and the fan base… I can’t imagine what they’re like!”

Eddie Howe has already secured legendary status… but he wants more
Howe is hungry for more silverware after becoming the first Englishman to lift a trophy since Harry Redknapp in 2008. He told reporters post-match: "I am so pleased to get this trophy to end the long wait and hopefully we can get some more in the future.
"We have some iconic players who will go down as legends, but hopefully with one (trophy), it can become more. There are no guarantees in football, but this has proved we can do it.
“You don't get many opportunities to play in a cup final, not many shots at it, but we took it today. We proved we can mix it with the very best and want to do that more often now."
