Prisoner’s Death Sentence Appeal Rejected in Iran
The Islamic Republic’s Supreme Court has rejected political prisoner Hatem Ozdemir’s retrial request.
The court informed Ozdemir’s lawyer of the decision on Thursday, according to the HRANA news agency.
He has been on death row since his sentence was upheld in September 2024.
Initially convicted of “armed rebellion” by Khoy’s Revolutionary Court in 2021, Ozdemir later faced a retrial that resulted in a second death sentence for “waging war against God” from Urmia’s Revolutionary Court.
Security forces arrested Ozdemir in 2019. He has been held primarily in Urmia Prison, with a brief transfer to an Intelligence Ministry detention facility.

Iran has ended the house arrest of opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi after 15 years of detention without trial, his son Hussein Karroubi confirmed on Sunday.
In an interview with the Jamaran website on Sunday, Hussein confirmed, “Security officers told my father that his house arrest has been removed, but due to security and protection issues, they will remain at his residence until April 9.”
Hussein Karroubi said his father told security officials that since his detention took place simultaneously with that of fellow Green Movement leader Mir Hossein Mousavi and his wife, Zahra Rahnavard, for the same reasons, their house arrests should also be lifted.
Mehdi Karroubi, Mir Hossein Mousavi, and Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest since February 14, 2011.
Hussein Karroubi previously told Iran’s judiciary chief that the government should not expect his father to remain silent after his release from house arrest.
“The government should be prepared and able to tolerate his opinions,” he said.
