Jamie Reuben gets it spot on in 47-word tribute to three Newcastle United 'titans'

Jamie Reuben has paid tribute to Newcastle United’s “three captains” after the 70-year wait for a domestic trophy finally came to an end.

The Magpies won the Carabao Cup on Sunday, beating Premier League champions-elect Liverpool 2-1. Geordie boy Dan Burn opened the scoring before Alexander Isak doubled the lead shortly after half-time. Federico Chiesa pulled one back in stoppage time but it was too little too late for the Reds.

Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier were handed over the trophy but before they lifted it in the Royal Box, the pair paused and called over Jamaal Lascelles.

Lascelles remains Newcastle’s club captain but hasn’t played for 12 months due to an ACL injury. Guimaraes has captained the team this campaign, while Trippier skippered the side regularly before that.

In a touching moment, the trio raised the trophy aloft. Reacting to the moment on X, co-owner Reuben wrote: “The three captains under our ownership are titans of the club, unbelievable characters who have and continue to do so much for the club on and off the field.

“For this, they have not only my respect but my admiration, @brunoog97@trippier2#jamaallascelles (welcome back big man).”

The Jamaal Lascelles story

Guimaraes and Trippier have played an instrumental role in Newcastle’s success since joining in January 2022, first helping the club to stay in the Premier League before qualifying for the Champions League and now winning a trophy.

But it hasn’t always been this good, and Lascelles knows that more than anyone.

The Derby-born defender earned the captain’s armband as a 22-year-old after standing up for the club against some of his mercenary teammates during the 2015-16 relegation season.

From Championship promotion, Premier League relegation battles, Champions League football and lifting a trophy, the now 31-year-old has experienced it all at St James’ Park.

While his playing time has been restricted, the centre-back has continued to lead the club behind the scenes and set standards.

Jamaal Lascelles injury update

Newcastle hope to see Lascelles back on the pitch before the end of the season as he enters the final stages of his recovery from the ACL injury he sustained against West Ham United last March.

“[He’s] making good progress,” Howe said. “Back out on the grass, not training with the team yet, but I'd say he'd be really happy currently with where he's at, super lean, super fit.

“He's now entering the last phase of his recovery from injury, and hopefully we'll see him soon.”

Lascelles is out of contract this summer, so if he is to leave, it’d be fitting to see him make a final appearance.
