Manchester United presented their new stadium project last week, but it did not take long for Jamie Carragher to take aim at the design.

The club’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe proudly revealed plans for the 100,000-seater venue.

A whole new stadium, which is expected to replace Old Trafford from 2029.

Most supporters have welcomed the proposed change, with Old Trafford showing clear signs of ageing and structural issues in recent years.

However, the design has split opinion.

Plenty have questioned whether it truly fits the identity of the club and the city of Manchester.

Liverpool legend Carragher was particularly unimpressed.

Jamie Carragher questions the design of new stadium

He’s claimed the stadium looked like something built in the Middle East rather than England.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said while speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“It looks like something out of Dubai.

“When I think of Manchester, a working-class area, the greatest football club in the world, I wouldn’t like that.”

Manchester United fan Adam McKola agreed with Carragher and admitted he was not convinced by the new look.

“Yeah, it looked a bit weird,” he said, while also expressing concerns about moving away from Old Trafford.

McKola insisted that he would rather see the club renovate their current home rather than risk creating a ‘soulless’ new venue.

The debate also sparked discussion over whether clubs actually benefit from stadium moves or if it is purely a business decision.

One fan argued that major clubs rarely improve after moving, suggesting it was more about revenue and attracting tourists.

United’s new £2bn project will be a huge undertaking.

There are questions over how it may affect spending in the transfer market.

The club’s ability to invest in the squad could be impacted over the next few seasons as the process moves forward.
