It was no secret that Manchester United had their eyes on a potential deal for Sporting Lisbon star Geovany Quenda.
When he arrived in England, Ruben Amorim promised to not sign Sporting players in January out of respect for his former club.
But with that agreement expiring in the summer window, Manchester United agreed personal terms with Geovany Quenda.
The 17-year-old was one of 27 Sporting players who debuted under Amorim, and a reunion in Manchester looked likely.
However, Chelsea swooped for Quenda, beating United to a £42m deal for the young winger. He is expected to join the Blues in 2026 – a clause United weren’t willing to offer.

Ruben Amorim’s Amad Diallo decision after Geovany Quenda collapse
Patrick Dorgu has been impressive at United since arriving in January – he looks as though he will be Ruben Amorim’s long-term left wing-back in his 3-4-2-1 system.
Geovany Quenda was viewed as Amorim’s ideal signing to be United’s right wing-back – a position currently being filled by either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui.
However, GiveMeSport claim that Amorim is considering a “surprise” U-turn on his plans for Amad Diallo.

The 22-year-old could be considered as a regular starter as a right wing-back when he returns from injury – rather than as a No.10.
When he first arrived, Amorim spoke about Amad playing wing-back, and the young United star did thrive in that position for a while before moving further up the pitch.
According to Transfermarkt, Amad has scored three goals and provided four assists in seven appearances playing in a deeper wing-back role.
When will Amad Diallo return from injury at Man United?
Amad looked set to compete for United’s Player of the Year award before he suffered an unfortunate injury.
An ankle injury meant Amad’s season was likely over, but Amorim has issued a promising update on his recovery.
Amad could return for the final month of the season according to Amorim, with the young winger making good progress behind the scenes.
“Even Amad, we’ll see in the end of the last month. I don’t want to say anything to you but I have the hope to have Amad before, we’ll see,” Amorim said.

With United chasing Europa League glory this season, it means Amad may be fit to feature in the final if the Red Devils reach the showpiece in Bilbao.
If he is fit, it will be interesting to see if he lines up as United’s right wing-back.
