What we think is actually Southampton's best XI - why don't managers know theirs?

Both former manager Russell Martin and current boss Ivan Juric tinkered with their XIs during their tenures but have failed to find consistency.

Promotion-winning Martin admitted he made too many changes, in his first TV interview since he was sacked in December earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Juric is yet to name an unchanged XI this season and raised eyebrows with his decision to revert to five-at-the-back against Wolves.

Since nobody else has done it successfully, we thought we would put our stamp on things and pick our preferred XI - assuming no injuries.

Below is the team we would like to start against Crystal Palace and, ideally, week-in, week-out, if performances dictated that to be plausible...

Formation: 4-2-3-1.

Goalkeeper

Aaron Ramsdale is a nice and easy one to start off with. He has shipped 50 goals in 21 games but it could have been a lot more if not for him.

Right back

Kyle Walker-Peters has not been at his brilliant best this season but he has been key in some of the better performances and is clearly quality.

Centre backs

Taylor Harwood-Bellis is one player who has probably struggled more with the step up than expected but he is the club's best central defender.

Jan Bednarek has made 177 Premier League appearances and 247 appearances in all competitions for Saints, one of the longest survivors.

Left back

This position is the first we have had to think on;Ryan Manning probably edges out Welington on performances - but both are decent options.

Defensive midfield

Lesley Ugochukwu's move to Saints looked doomed under Martin but he has been better under Juric and is a unique profile of six at the club.

Joe Aribo is as versatile as they come and played in all sorts of positions for Saints. Lacks a bit of energy but is ahead of Flynn Downes this season.

Attacking midfield

Mateus Fernandes is one of few players to emerge from this season with real credit and it is a no-brainer to have him playing behind the striker.

Wingers

Young Tyler Dibling has not been the same since Martin departed but has the quality to change games and the freedom to do so in this system.

Kamaldeen Sulemana is yet to add consistent goals and assists to his game and may never at Saints, but he is direct and can beat defenders with pace.

Striker

Paul Onuachu has scored three goals in his last eight Premier League games, levelling him with Aribo as top scorer, and is the needed focal point.

First XI

(4-2-3-1): Ramsdale; Walker-Peters, Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Manning; Ugochukwu, Aribo, Dibling, Fernandes, Kamaldeen; Onuachu.

Second XI (to pick bench from)

McCarthy; Sugawara, Bree, Bella-Kotchap, Welington; Downes, Smallbone, Gronbaek, Lallana, Fraser; Archer.

The rationale

Saints fans have been crying out for consistency, simplicity and for a four-at-the-back that takes the game to the opposition first and foremost.

It is worth saying that a lot of time, Juric has not had all of these players available to him and has had to find solutions to a lot of injuries.

But he has admitted he would be happy with 0-0 in every game - that is the Italian coach in him - and his system against Wolves was evidence of that.

Ramsdale is the easiest pick and nobody has come in and produced better performances this season than the Championship-hardened back four.

This gives the back four the confidence of understanding their teammates besides them and knowing exactly what is their zone of responsibility.

Downes loses his place to loanee Ugochukwu in our team but the Frenchman and Aribo have been more reliable in possession this season.

Dibling, Fernandes and Kamaldeen all in their strongest positions feels fairly competitive and Onuachu is a target to aim for at halfway and in the box.

Would it make any difference and would it be strong enough to pick up the points in the Premier League? That is a different matter altogether.

Anyway, we're not expecting a phone call from Johannes Spors but this is what we would play if it came. What would be your starting XI?
