Wizards Catch Unexpected Strays From Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver

The Washington Wizards are making some strides this season, particularly in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign. That being said, they're still one of the worst teams in the league in terms of a record. That has opened up the team to some unexpected strays from unexpected sources.

During John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" show, sports betting and gambling was one of Oliver's topics in his monologue. The British late night host showed a clip of Wizards owner Ted Leonsis from 2018 arguing for the legalization of sports betting.

Oliver ripped into Leonsis' comments, making fun of the Wizards owner's comments about wanting to seemingly change the name of sports betting and gambling. Along the way, Oliver also managed to take a shot against the Wizards, saying, "In [Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis'] particular case, his interest may have had something to do with the fact that the Wizards are an absolute terrible basketball team."

The Wizards currently have the worst record in the league, having just 15 wins to 52 losses. This will be the seventh consecutive season where Washington will finish with a sub-.500 record. Last season, the Wizards won only 15 games.

That being said, there's been a lot of reason for Wizards fans to be optimistic. The Wizards' rookies and sophomores have been quite impressive in the second half of the season. Bub Carrington, Alex Sarr, and Bilal Coulibaly have looked quite impressive, and Jordan Poole remains as the star of the team.
