Google’s owner Alphabet has made its biggest acquisition ever - snapping up cybersecurity company Wiz for $32billion (£24.7bn).
If approved, the deal will see the Israeli startup join Google Cloud, the tech giant’s multi-billion-dollar service that lets businesses and individuals store data and run programs over the internet instead of on their own computers or servers.
Founded in 2020, Wiz has rapidly established itself as a key player in the cybersecurity sector, offering cloud protection services to businesses. The company focuses on securing online data and applications from cyber threats, acting as a "security guard" for cloud systems.
Though the general public may not interact with Wiz directly, its services help to secure many of the platforms we use daily, such as online banking and social media. Wiz is currently used by 45 per cent of Fortune 100 companies and protects over 5 million cloud workloads.
What are Google’s biggest acquisitions of all time?
Google has maintained its position as a tech behemoth through strategic acquisitions of a range of tech and data firms. These are some of the big G’s biggest deals:
Wiz: acquired for $32 billion in March 2025.
Motorola Mobility: A mobile device manufacturer purchased for $12.5 billion in 2011.
Nest Labs: A home automation company bought for $3.2 billion in 2014.
Looker: A big data and analytics firm acquired for $2.6 billion in 2019.
DeepMind Technologies: An artificial intelligence company purchased for $625 million in 2014.
Google plays catch up in the cloud
In a blog post, Wiz said the acquisition by Google Cloud would accelerate its innovation and expand its capabilities, particularly by integrating Google Cloud's AI and cybersecurity expertise.
Addressing its existing clients, it said it would continue to work with other cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle.
The trio are Google’s closest rivals in a cloud industry worth an estimated $723.4 billion. The acquisition of Wiz is likely to strengthen Google Cloud’s position, especially in cybersecurity, as it seeks to close the gap with the competition.
"Becoming part of Google Cloud is effectively strapping a rocket to our backs: it will accelerate our rate of innovation faster than what we could achieve as a standalone company," said Assaf Rappaport, co-founder and CEO of Wiz.
“Google Cloud is a leader in cloud infrastructure, with deep AI expertise and a track record of industry-leading security innovation,” Google said in a statement. “Bringing all this to Wiz will help make their solutions even better and more scalable, benefiting customers and partners across all major clouds.”
