Chelsea's final points tally predicted as UCL fate becomes clear

Chelsea's chances of qualifying for the Champions League have been predicted by a supercomputer.

The Blues are currently in fourth place in the Premier League standings and battling to qualify for Europe's elite cup competition for next season. The March international break is underway and Chelsea go into the hiatus on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium at the weekend.

Enzo Maresca's side now have two weeks to wait until they return to Premier League action. The next game will see Chelsea host Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on April 3, in what will be the first of their final nine top-flight matches this season.

With the run-in starting to gather pace in just a couple of weeks time, Opta Analyst have put together a predicted version of how the final Premier League table will look. The prediction believes that Chelsea will finish in sixth place at the end of the season, which would not be enough to secure a spot in the Champions League.

According to the prediction, Chelsea will finish with 63 points (63.06) at the end of the season. This will be behind Newcastle United in fifth with 64 points (64.26) and Manchester City in fourth, who are tipped to amass 66 points (66.06).

Finishing in sixth spot would be enough to qualify for the Europa League, but not the Champions League. England could have five places which qualify for the competition based on their UEFA coefficient, which is affected by how the English clubs succeed in their various European tournaments this season.

The prediction has given Chelsea a 24.4 per cent chance of qualifying for the Champions League and a 20.56 per cent likelihood of qualifying for the Europa League. With nine matches to play, if the prediction turns out to be true, it would see the Blues pick up 14 points from their run-in, which could come from four wins, two draws and three defeats - as well as other combinations.
