Toon legend Alan Shearer has finally shared his joy, elation and so much more after Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup.

A city that has never felt more united in recent memory, perhaps barring the day the takeover got announced, has seen its football team praised from all corners.

The words of club icon Shearer will have been anticipated by many, and the Premier League’s all time top goalscorer didn’t disappoint while certainly in a merry state.

“Definitely not hungover because I’ve been on it all day again,” was how Shearer started his summary of the Mags winning the trophy the morning after. That’s the kind of representation I can get behind.

Gosforth’s very own was spotted with his scarf in hand, head looking towards the heavens in total euphoria at Wembley on Sunday night and may not have been in the best state as he told Gary Lineker about his emotions on The Rest Is Football.

He told of the words he shared with the squad while in elation, how he thought of his father after the final whistle and so much more in a must-watch synopsis of our historic day. Watch it in full below:

During the podcast, which you can watch above, Shearer revealed the text he sent Eddie Howe after Sunday’s final:

“I haven’t had a chat with Eddie yet, no. I just sent him a text message, saying ‘thank you’ with a black and white love heart,” he said. “That’s all I said. What more can I say to him.”

No doubt there are few who deserve to celebrate the win more than Shearer after all he’s given for our club over the years, but Howe is certainly that has earned the right to cherish this moment.

It’s almost impossible to find the words of gratitude to thank the man who has ended our 70-year domestic trophy drought after having already guided us to Champions League football. The club is in an entirely different state to it was when he joined.

Thank you, as Shearer says, is perfectly apt.
