Shaun Wright-Phillips says Manchester City's best player was also the worst trainer

Shaun Wright-Phillips spent 10 years with Manchester City during two separate spells.

Manchester City signed Shaun Wright-Phillips from Nottingham Forest as a 16-year-old in 1998, before selling him on to Chelsea in 2005.

However, he returned to The Etihad from Stamford Bridge three years later.

Whilst Wright-Phillips missed the real glory years at Man City, he still enjoyed a great career with the club.

He won the FA Cup with the Cityzens in 2011, and played alongside some exceptionally gifted players.

But which one stood out to him as the best of the bunch?

Carlos Tevez was Man City’s best player and the worst trainer

The Manchester City fans absolutely adored Carlos Tevez.

What made him even more of a cult hero at The Etihad was the fact that he joined them from Manchester United, and his subsequent continual goading of his former club.

As good as he was for City, many of his fellow players have spoken about his lack of effort during training in the past.

In 2023, Owen Hargreaves said Carlos Tevez was nothing special during Manchester City training.

And now another player has chimed in with his verdict on the mercurial Argentinian.

Wright-Phillips praised Tevez but criticised him in the same breath, when speaking on The Dressing Room podcast:

“And then you had Tevez, who was probably the worst trainer, but best player. He was a switch. He just came alive. And he used to run all day. It was unbelievable.

“But in training, he was just so relaxed. Didn’t really do a lot. And then game day, he was like a pit bull, man. It was scary.”

Tevez bagged an impressive 73 goals and 32 assists in 148 games in all competitions for Man City (Transfermarkt).

Perhaps the main reason why the Man City fans adored Tevez was because of the way he antagonised the Manchester United players and fans every time they faced each other,

Why Carlos Tevez once called Gary Neville an idiot and a moron

Tevez did not like Neville’s take on his exit from Old Trafford.

The Man United legend backed Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision not to cave into Tevez’s salary demands.

The Argentinian then suggested that Neville was a ‘bootlicking moron’, before labelling him as an ‘idiot’ (The Guardian).

Carkos Tevez certainly didn’t hold back with his opinions, and that’s why he was loved by the Manchester City fans.

Judging by Shaun Wright-Phillips’ comments, he was thought of very highly indeed by his teammates as well.
