Ed Sheeran makes surprise St Patrick’s Day appearance at famous Boston Irish pub

Singer songwriter Ed Sheeran gave an impromptu performance at one of Boston’s most popular Irish pubs on St Patrick’s Day.

Lucky crowds who managed to make it through the lengthy line outside The Dubliner pub were treated to an intimate performance from the British singer. He donned a Boston Celtics jersey as he made a swift entrance into the pub, greeted by adoring fans. Sheeran hopped up on a stage much smaller than his usual and belted out some of his hits, backed by Irish trad group, Beoga.

The crowds spilled from the restaurant to the sidewalk outside as they tried to get a glimpse of the star.

Sheeran himself shared a video of the evening on his Instagram account, writing, “Boston for Paddy’s day with @beogamusic, what a gaff.”

The singer, who grew up in Suffolk in the UK, has strong Irish roots and performed a hit from his 2016 album Divide, titled Nancy Mulligan. The song was inspired by his fraternal grandparents’ love story, his grandmother being the song’s namesake.

Sheeran also performed his hit Galway Girl, which he playfully shared on his story writing, “Meet me in the pub tonight (it’s ok to admit you like this song today bruh).”

Sheeran thanked the Dubliner Pub before leaving the stage and reportedly bought a round of drinks for the whole bar before heading off. The pub wrote on Instagram, "What a great end to an amazing weekend."

The Dubliner, which recently spoke to the Irish Star about the offensively named Irish Car Bomb drink, are the official pub partner of Dermot Kennedy's Misneach Festival which takes place this week in Boston's TD Garden.

The pub announced the partnership, expressing their pride to be a part of "bringing the amazing new festival to Boston."

Kennedy is also known to perform impromptu gigs, particularly in Boston. The 'Outnumbered' singer has a strong connection to the city, having spent a summer there busking and playing music as a teen.
