Patriots bust re-signs with AFC contender

JuJu Smith-Schuster is staying in Kansas City.

The veteran wideout signed a one-year deal to remain with the Chiefs, according to the team. The financial terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed.

Cut by the Patriots last August, Smith-Schuster signed with Kansas City and caught 18 passes for 231 yards during the regular season. He was impactful in the AFC Championship with a pair of receptions for 60 yards, but was held without a catch in a Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.

Smith-Schuster signed a a 3-year, $25.5 million contract with the Patriots in 2023, but didn’t make it to the second season of that deal amidst a disappointing tenure. The former Pro Bowler caught 29 passes for 260 yards in New England, and was cut last summer despite being surrounded by an underwhelming receiving room.

To add insult to injury, Jakobi Meyers has continued to ascend in Las Vegas, topping 1000 receiving yards in 2024. The Patriots essentially opted to sign Smith-Schuster over their homegrown product, as the two agreed to similar contracts in the 2023 offseason.

“Cold world lol,” Meyers posted on social media minutes after Smith-Schuster signed with the Patriots.
