Christian Eriksen has revealed that he expects to leave Manchester United in the summer, having not heard anything about a potential new contract. The experienced Dane moved to Old Trafford in 2022 after a short spell at Brentford, which followed his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. He is only tied down to United until the end of the season, meaning he will depart on a free transfer as things stand.
It has been speculated that Eriksen is likely to leave United when his current deal expires, given his declining role within the team. This season, he has only started nine Premier League games with the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo getting more minutes in the engine room.
Eriksen is yet to be offered a new deal by the Red Devils and feels his time at the club is coming to an end. He is already thinking about his next move, telling Danish media that he will consider any offers that come in ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
"I haven’t heard anything from the club and, therefore, I assume the collaboration will stop, that’s how I interpret it," said Eriksen.
"My contract expires this summer and I am prepared to find something new. I am fine with that. Where it will be, I haven’t decided yet. I haven’t tried to be free of contract except after the cardiac arrest but that was a bit of a different situation.
"I am waiting and seeing what offers come in. I am not going to make any hasty decisions. If the right thing comes, I will take it, but I don’t know what the right thing is."
Eriksen added that he does not intend to stay in the Premier League if he is not offered a new deal by United. He is open to joining a team in Denmark at some point before he retires, but is not yet prepared to return to his native land.
"The intention is not to stay in England," continued Eriksen. "I am not going to the USA. We are not going that far. We would like to stay in Europe, but it is too early to go home to Denmark. I feel like I have some good years abroad left."
Eriksen will not be able to join an Italian top-flight club because he is banned from playing in Serie A. After his cardiac arrest, he was fitted with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to prevent him from having another incident on the pitch.
Players with these devices are not allowed to play in Italy's highest division, a rule which led to Eriksen's release from Inter Milan in 2021. The defibrillators are not banned in many other European leagues, though, meaning the 33-year-old still has plenty of choice.
