Vale Prof Ian Maynard FBASES

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Professor Ian Maynard FBASES a highly respected and influential figure in the field of sport and exercise psychology and a former BASES Board and Division Chair member. Ian was a driving force in advancing sport psychology as a professional qualification, shaping both BASES and the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology within the British Psychological Society. His impact on the discipline and the generations of students , researchers and practitioners he mentored is immeasurable. Ian’s distinguished career in Higher Education began at the University of Chichester (1987–1999), before he moved to Sheffield Hallam University, where he served as Director of the Research Centre for Sport and Exercise Science (1999–2017). In 2017, he joined the University of Essex as Head of Department, before retiring in 2024. An esteemed researcher and scholar, Ian published over 120 journal articles and contributed significantly to the academic community as Editor of The Sport Psychologist and Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. His dedication, leadership, and passion for the field left an enduring legacy. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues across the sport and exercise psychology community. His influence, mentorship, and contributions will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
