Owen Hargreaves names ‘the only’ Manchester City player who has been good enough this season

Manchester City are enduring what has to be considered their worst season for over a decade.

Manchester City aren’t guaranteed a Champions League spot next season, the title race is over, and the European dream has also been dashed.

Needless to say, certain Manchester City players haven’t been up to scratch this season.

Kevin De Bruyne has been criticised in recent times, while Ederson could leave Manchester City this summer off the back of what has been a disappointing season.

Speaking on The Weekend Wrap, Owen Hargreaves and Dion Dublin have been analysing City’s recent struggles, and according to Hargreaves, there’s only once Man City player who has been up to scratch this season.

Erling Haaland is the only Manchester City player up to standard

Hargreaves and Dublin discussed City’s recent struggles.

According to Hargreaves, the majority of the squad are out of sorts, singling out Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva as three players who haven’t been at their best.

However, Hargreaves says Erling Haaland is the only player who is up to the right sort of standards.

“You normally have one or two who are off it, but everyone is off it, nobody is playing well, you’re not just carrying two or three it’s eight or nine?” Dublin said.

“The only one whose standards are there are Haaland aren’t they? They have goalkeeping problems, the defenders have been injured, the midfield balance is off. The wingers, Phil Foden was Player of the Year last year, he’s been quiet, De Bruyne, we haven’t seen him, Silva has been quiet. Haaland is the guy, but who would’ve thought they’d have had issues all at the same time,” Hargreaves said.

Erling Haaland stats this season

Manchester City may have had a poor season, but Erling Haaland has maintained his status as one of the very best strikers in the world.

Haaland has been tipped for the Ballon d’Or in the future by Rodri, and while he probably won’t win that award this season, it’s easy to see why Haaland is held in such esteem.

In a season when many of City’s players are struggling for form, Haaland is still scoring goals at a ridiculous rate.

Haaland’s goalscoring exploits have become the norm in recent years, but make no mistake about, it scoring this many goals in a season is not normal.

Sergio Aguero is considered by many to be the best striker in Manchester City’s history, and his highest goal tally in a season was 32 – Haaland is on track to smash that number, even in a season when the team is struggling.

Haaland is a remarkable footballer, and he remains a shining light in what has been a tough season for City.

There’s a reason Robbie Savage thinks Haaland is still a better striker than Alexander Isak.
