Celtic star beats £20m Manchester United man to recognition as big decision made

Sunday’s Glasgow derby aside, Celtic have been terrific this season.

The Hoops hold a whopping 13 point lead over Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership and have conceded the least amount of goals in the division across their 30 outings.

Kasper Schmeichel has played a major part in that defensive record and the Dane made history in a Celtic jersey earlier this term and came close to equaling another record not too long later.

So it has been a fine season for Schmeichel who also signed a new Celtic deal earlier this term to shut down any unnecessary rumours or speculation about his future headed into the summer.

Kasper Schmeichel will captain Denmark vs Portugal

His run in the starting XI for Celts has served the 38-year-old well domestically with the Premier Sports Cup acting as his first trophy at the club. But it has also done him a turn where his international career is concerned, too.

Schmeichel will add to his incredible 111 Denmark A squad caps in his side’s Nations League playoff tie against Cristiano Ronaldo’s side with the first-leg coming on Thursday at Parken, home of FC Copenhagen.

The second is to take place a few days later and head coach Brian Riemer has explained this week how Schmeichel will be his captain and wear the armband in place of the regular skipper.

Schmeichel’s Celtic form earns him Denmark armband ahead of Man Utd star

And Riemer, according to Bold, has this week confirmed to the country that Schmeichel will take on the responsibility for the first time since the European Championships in 2024.

According to the same publication, Schmeichel has been picked as the Danes’ captain ahead of another viable option in the experienced midfield star Christian Eriksen.

The Manchester United man has played 27 times for the Red Devils this season compared to Schmeichel’s 46 games this campaign.

Eriksen, like Schmeichel, is vastly experienced at that level and himself has earned 140 caps.
