Manchester United look set to try and sign a striker in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United’s hopes of a trophy this season are pinned upon the Europa League as they are in the quarter-finals of the competition. They beat Real Sociedad 5-2 in the round of 16.
Seeing as the Premier League is somewhat of a write-off, Ruben Amorim will be looking ahead to the summer transfer window in order to build a squad capable of playing in his 3-4-3 system.
One position that emerged as a weakness is the striker spot, even though Rasmus Hojlund scored during United’s last game. He has struggled this season with just three goals in the Premier League.
The Red Devils are expected to try and sign a striker in the summer transfer window, and have reportedly shortlisted three names.
Journalist names United’s three striker targets
United will likely have to make a few sales in the summer to afford a world-class striker as they are in such high-demand at the moment.
They have been linked to several strikers including the likes of Sporting CP attacker Viktor Gyokeres due to his links to Amorim. However, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has named three more strikers on United’s shortlist, alongside Gyokeres.
He posted on X: “Manchester United are looking to strengthen their attack in the summer and are intensively scouting the market. Talks have already begun. From the Bundesliga, the Red Devils are closely monitoring Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko. Viktor Gyökeres and Victor Osimhen remain high on their list.”
All four have been linked to rivals Arsenal too including Benjamin Sesko, who is set to provide a lot of transfer interest in the summer. He is expected to cost around £66 million due to a release clause that will become active in the window.
Victor Osimhen’s future is very uncertain due to him returning to Napoli after completing his loan spell at Galatasaray. So far, the Nigerian has scored 20 goals in 22 games. Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike has been linked to Arsenal, and plays more as a speedster-type striker rather than the target-man style of Sesko, Gyokeres and Osimhen.
United could opt for ‘budget’ alternative
The issue for United is that they are currently not in a brilliant position when it comes to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability Rules. It means that they may have to make significant sales in order to afford one of these four.
If they don’t want to do that, they could opt for an alternative target in the form of Lille FC striker Jonathan David. His contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he will likely become a free agent.
David’s numbers have been as good as anyone this season, as he has scored 23 goals and provided 10 assists this season for Lille in 41 appearances. He has been linked to United, Liverpool and West Ham, as he remains one of the most in-demand strikers in Europe.
In other news, United have reportedly submitted a bid to sign a former Leeds United star from FC Barcelona.
