Bruno Fernandes is now chasing Man United legend Sir Alex Ferguson once called'messiah'

Bruno Fernandes is writing his name into the Manchester United history books this season.

It has been an underwhelming season for the Red Devils, with Ruben Amorim’s side down in 13th place in the Premier League table.

It seems Manchester United have turned a corner after impressing against Real Sociedad and Leicester City this week, but in the words of Amorim – there is still a long way to go.

One shining light this season has been the incredible form of Bruno Fernandes. United’s captain has thrived in a deeper role under Amorim, but he has still scored 16 goals and provided 15 assists from midfield.

Fernandes smashed Europa League records earlier this month with his hat-trick against Real Sociedad. Now he is on the brink of overtaking club legends.

Bruno Fernandes closing in on Eric Cantona record

Fernandes has faced huge criticism this season, but ultimately, United would be in an even worse position without him.

United’s Portuguese magnifico has now been at the club for over five years and his goal record speaks for itself.

As pointed out by The Athletic, Bruno Fernandes’ goal and assists against Leicester means he has now contributed to 112 Premier League goals at United.

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Eric Cantona as ‘messiah’

When it comes to United’s best strikers of all time, Eric Cantona deservedly takes his place at the top end of the list.

Cantona had a huge impact on United under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1990s, and the legendary manager always speaks highly of him.

In 2024, Ferguson hailed Cantona as a “messiah” at Manchester United for his impact on the club. “When Eric Cantona came – he was a messiah. He transformed us. The confidence factor. There’s no question about that.”
