Newcastle United beat Liverpool to lift the Carabao Cup trophy at Wembley - and Joelinton was NewcastleWorld’s man of the match.

He didn’t get the official shout, but NewcastleWorld voted in favour of Joelinton to be named man of the match in the Carabao Cup final. While writer Charlie Bennett opted for goalscorer and local hero Dan Burn, both editor Liam Kennedy and lead writer Jordan Cronin went for the Magpies’ Brazilian midfield powerhouse. In fairness, it was very hard to pick between ALL of the lads in black and white on the day.

As is tradition, it was the press pack at Wembley who chose which player should get the reward, and it seems the consensus was for Burn. And who can really argue? The lad is a walking fairytale story. If you wrote a script for a film about Burn’s career and exploits, people might not even find it believable, such have his achievements soared even in the last week, from such lowly beginnings.

And while Burn has been soaking in the plaudits of his new teammates at England, as well as getting a national press grilling after his first ever international call up, he’s not the only squad member who had a quick turnaround between Wembley glory and a national call. Joelinton, with skipper Bruno Guimaraes, are with the Brazil squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.

And as her husband flew back off to Brazil, Joelinton’s other half Thays Gondim paid tribute on Instagram following Joelinton writing himself into the Newcastle United history books at the weekend. Taking to social media, she wrote this amazingly emotive message. It said: “We will never forget this historic day!! 🏆

“But I'll never let you forget all the other days we don't win, the hard you work, the hard you fight, the times you couldn't, the things you wanted to... never. Not every day we smile, but every day I'm proud of this player, husband, father, son... It's 14 years of Joelinton working on and off the field, with grit and a lot of honesty. You are a champion long time ago... our warrior! Thanks for everything my husband People love you so much. How lucky are we!!!”

Joelinton bulled Liverpool with his all-action, physical display on the day, with the player putting a number of goal-saving blocks.
