The Pittsburgh Steelers wanted Justin Fields to stay and be their quarterback in 2025. Yet, Fields spurned that thought to head to the New York Jets for a two-year, $40 million offer with $30 million guaranteed.
What caused the breakdown between Fields and the Steelers? Jeremy Fowler of ESPN said the Steelers did offer Fields a solid contract, but that it was not enough to stop him from going elsewhere. Fields is now a Jet while the Steelers are waiting for their next move.
“They put together an offer for Justin Fields that I was told was very competitive with what the Jets offered him,” Fowler said. “Something went off where he chose the Jets and he must’ve felt the love more from the Jets than he did the Steelers.”
Fields had long been intrigued by the Jets, and the draw is not only the new staff there but former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson. All of that came together to put in the perfect concoction for Fields to head to the Jets.
The Steelers are in talks with Aaron Rodgers, and they could now get across the finish line. With limited options to work with and still a lot of cap space, most of that will go toward Rodgers or another quarterback.
