U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that some countries may avoid U.S. new tariffs that will take effect on April 2 through negotiations or a deal if they stop unfair trade practices. Bessent made the remarks on Tuesday in a Fox Business interview laying out U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans for reciprocal tariffs. The treasury secretary said that Washington will present its trading partners on April 2 with a number representing their tariff and other barriers. Bessent said that the U.S. will give trading partner countries a proposed U.S. tariff rate based on their own rates, nontariff barriers, currency manipulation, unfair funding and labor suppression, along with an opportunity to negotiate to avoid a “tariff wall.” He added that if the countries stop the practices, the U.S. will not "put up the tariff wall.”
Bessent said that for some countries, the rate could be quite low, for some countries, it could be quite high.
