The Philadelphia Eagles may have earned their Super Bowl rings in Super Bowl LIX, but their receiver room still has concerns heading into the 2025 season. Despite possessing one of the NFL's most talented wide receiver duos in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, the Eagles' depth was tested throughout their championship run, revealing potential areas for improvement as they look to defend their title.
Jahan Dotson ranked 11th on the team in total offensive snaps with 830, but his statistical impact was minimal. Outside of Philadelphia's Week 18 matchup against the New York Giants-when the Eagles rested their starters and Dotson operated as WR1-the former 16th overall pick managed just 12 catches for 122 yards and no touchdowns across 16 regular-season games.
Despite this limited production and opportunity (Dotson was targeted only 22 times in those 16 games), he remained the clear third option behind Brown and Smith. Even when injuries sidelined Brown, Smith, and tight end Dallas Goedert at various points, Dotson's role rarely expanded, prompting calls for an upgrade at the WR3 position before the trade deadline.
Joe Giglio of the 94WIP Midday Show in Philadelphia has proposed a trade with the Green Bay Packers that would send a future Day 3 pick to Wisconsin in exchange for versatile receiver Bo Melton.
"Green Bay has a plethora of wide receivers but lacks a true No. 1," Giglio noted. "If that kind of player is acquired, the team could consolidate its resources at the position before having to pay young players more than they could be worth. Melton, a jack-of-all-trades, has caught passes, rushed the ball, and returned kicks in his brief NFL career."
Melton, 25, was originally a Seattle Seahawks seventh-round selection before being signed off their practice squad by Green Bay late in the 2022 season. While his opportunities with the Packers have been limited, he appeared in all 17 games during the 2024 season and has maintained a respectable 12.9 yards-per-reception average throughout his NFL career.
The proposed trade represents a low-risk depth move rather than a significant upgrade. Green Bay currently has several young receivers ahead of Melton on its depth chart, including Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks. Even if acquired by Philadelphia, Melton would likely struggle to crack the Eagles' top four receiver spots.

Dotson proved to be an ideal WR3 for the Eagles during their championship run, understanding his role and never complaining about limited targets. He remains a more polished player than Melton, while Johnny Wilson's size and special teams contributions have solidified his position as WR4 entering 2025.
That said, adding competition for Ainias Smith and Britain Covey (if he returns) makes sense for training camp depth. Melton's experience on special teams in Green Bay would certainly bolster his case for a roster spot, but expectations should be tempered-he would likely compete for a fringe roster position rather than challenging for significant playing time in Philadelphia's receiver rotation.
