If ever there was a World War II pilot who had nine lives, it was the Group Captain John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway.

Serving in the British Royal Air Force (RAF), the airman from Dartry in south Dublin was shot down no ­fewer than four times during the war, and escaped many other dangerous ­sorties as a pilot.
