Chelsea ‘considering’ paying penalty to get out of Sancho loan obligation — reports

It’s the international break, so it’s time for some transfer rumors! And we start with Jadon Sancho, who, as we know, is on loan at Chelsea this season from Manchester United.

Sancho has been a steady part of the attacking rotation since joining at the end of the summer transfer window, and initially it looked like we may have struck a veritable bargain. The 24-year-old picked up an assist in each of his first three appearances for us, and would add two more assists and a couple goals as well in his next seven outings.

Unfortunately, since scoring against Spurs in our 4-3 win in early December, Sancho has just one assist (and no goals) in his fourteen appearances across all competitions. While the team in general have struggled as well, Sancho’s been perhaps the worst offender not named Christopher Nkunku — both maddeningly shot-shy and impact-free.

The terms of our loan agreement include a £25m obligation to make the deal permanent, reportedly contingent on Chelsea finishing above 14th in the table. But that amount looks less like a bargain these days and more like money down the drain.

Is there any way out of this deal for us?

Apparently yes! According to recent reports, including from the Mail, the Athletic, ESPN, and others, Chelsea could pay a “penalty” instead. It’s not at all clear how much this penalty may be, but presumably it’s less than the £25m clause. Hopefully a lot less!

Sancho appears to be enjoying his time at Chelsea, and “freedom” from Manchester United (see also: Marcus Rashford), and has spoken highly of his teammates and head coach Enzo Maresca ... but that may not be enough in the end.
