Chelsea could finally get the chance to sign£85m forward after recent interest but Blues fans will be totally against it - opinion

The opportunity to land one former target could present itself to Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea are likely to sign a new striker when the market opens to help out Nicolas Jackson next season.

Marc Guiu is the only other recognised centre-forward in Enzo Maresca‘s squad, and the former Barcelona player is still just a teenager.

Chelsea are interested in Joao Pedro of Brighton & Hove Albion, but he is not the only Premier League No.9 they appreciate.

Darwin Nunez could be available this summer

Darwin Nunez is one striker who has been of interest to Chelsea in the past. It is thought that they considered the 25-year-old before his £85m move from Benfica to Liverpool in 2022 and after it as well.

In January, it was claimed that Chelsea had revived their interest in Nunez, though nothing happened during the winter transfer window in the end.

However, if the Blues still want to sign Nunez, then they could have a great opportunity to in the summer.

According to GiveMeSport, the Uruguayan could leave Anfield after the conclusion of this season, with Arne Slot looking to bring in a new No.9.

While Nunez clearly has admirers at Stamford Bridge, his arrival would probably not go down too well with Chelsea supporters.

The former Benfica man has not been a success in the Premier League and has gained a reputation for missing clear-cut chances.

Blues fans are likely to prefer someone like Viktor Gyokeres, who has scored 40 goals in all competitions this term. Gyokeres is actually on Chelsea’s radar, so there is a possibility of him linking up with Maresca’s side in the summer.

Darwin Nunez’s xG a concern

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are said to be big believers of data. If that is the case, then Chelsea should not be going anywhere near Nunez.

Again, the Uruguay international has not been clinical in a Liverpool shirt and the numbers show it.

Nunez should have scored more goals in each of his three seasons at Anfield based on xG. For example, in his maiden Premier League campaign, he had an xG of 14.37 but only managed to score nine goals.

Darwin Nunez Appearances Minutes Goals xG xG difference

2024/25 23 934 5 6.20 -1.20

2023/24 36 2,037 11 19.19 -8.19

2022/23 29 1,702 9 14.37 -5.37

Ultimately, Nunez misses too many chances, good ones as well. Chelsea should look elsewhere in their search for a new striker.
