'I've become...' - Rasmus Hojlund spots major change during Man United goal drought, he is different now

Rasmus Hojlund went 21 games without scoring before he found the back of the net for Manchester United against Leicester City.

Manchester United beat Leicester City 3-0 on Sunday evening to extend their unbeaten streak to four matches.

It was Rasmus Hojlund who scored United’s opener at the King Power Stadium after latching onto Bruno Fernandes’ pass and firing in a low-driven shot past Mads Hermansen.

Hojlund was praised for ending his goal drought and Paul Scholes admitted Hojlund is improving in recent weeks. Hopefully he can return to the form he showed during his debut season at Old Trafford.

After a string of positive results, including two comfortable wins over Real Sociedad and Leicester, Hojlund believes United have turned a corner under Ruben Amorim.

What has changed about Rasmus Hojlund at Man United

Amorim kept faith in Hojlund even during his goal drought, and the Dane finally repaid that faith with a well-taken goal on the weekend.

Now, Hojlund has joined the Denmark national team for the next two weeks before United resume their Premier League campaign against Nottingham Forest.

While on international duty, Hojlund was asked about his form at United and in his response he revealed that he is now much “calmer”.

As quoted by Danish outlet Bold, Hojlund said: “The right word to use is probably ‘frustrating’. It has affected me quite a bit, but it would have worried me more if it had been the other way around. If it hadn’t happened to me.

“It’s been a period where I would have liked to have done better, but at the same time I’ve learned a lot from it.

“I’ve become a little calmer now, and I’m in a good place mentally. I’ve proven many times that I can score goals, so it’s not because I lost faith in my ability.”

Rasmus Hojlund was trying too hard at Man United

Even while he was not scoring, Hojlund’s work rate was never in question – he always works hard for the team and covers plenty of distance.

But there was a growing feeling that Hojlund was almost trying too hard and finding himself out of position in games. He was too often dropping deep and so Hojlund’s touches in the box were minimal.

Former United star Andy Cole suggested Hojlund was “obsessed” with fighting defenders, which resulted in him losing a lot of unneccesary duels and giving away possession.

But Hojlund’s “calmer” approach was visible against Leicester. Despite the huge pressure on him to end his goal drought, he kept his composure in front of goal and fired United into the lead.

Hojlund is adapting to Amorim’s instructions, but the last few games have proven that he is learning and beginning to get things right. Hopefully it results in lots more goals.
