China welcomes all efforts to secure a ceasefire to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Wednesday in comments to a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mao Ning said at a daily press briefing that China has consistently advocated for resolving the crisis through dialogue and negotiation from the very beginning.

"We are glad to see all efforts that lead to a ceasefire, viewing this as a necessary step toward achieving peace," Mao said.

In their Tuesday phone conversation, Putin and Trump agreed that the peace in Ukraine "will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire."
