Fabrizio Romano has given his slant on the surprising links between Liverpool and Julian Alvarez that emerged last week.

The 25-year-old Argentine international, who only joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City last summer, has seen his name increasingly linked with a move to Anfield despite firm denials from his current club.

With Liverpool reportedly planning significant attacking reinforcements ahead of the 2025/26 season, the World Cup winner’s impressive form has placed him firmly on the Reds’ radar.

The transfer rumors gained substantial credibility when Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, publicly acknowledged Liverpool’s prior pursuit of his client before his move to Spain.

“I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julian last summer,” Hidalgo said. “As for the future, this is not the right time to talk about it, as Julian is participating in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

Julián Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, speaking to @winwinallsports:

“I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julián last season (Last Summer).”

This revelation has added weight to reports that Liverpool’s interest in the World Cup-winning forward never waned despite missing out on him previously.

Some reports even claim that Liverpool had held negotiations with Manchester City last year, but a deal couldn’t be reached as City wanted to include Luis Diaz in the transfer plus a significant fee.

The clubs reportedly disagreed on Diaz’s valuation – Liverpool priced him at £60 million while City viewed him as a £45 million asset – creating an impasse that ultimately allowed Atletico Madrid to secure Alvarez’s services for an initial £65 million with a potential £17 million in add-ons.

The 25-year-old has a very good debut season for Atletico Madrid, managing 23 goals and 5 assists in 44 appearances.

Now Romano has suggested that the reports claiming the Reds wanted Alvarez were true.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool were indeed interested in Julian Alvarez last summer – but that’s about the extent of the story right now:

“He was on their shortlist last summer, for sure.”

“Now he’s happy at Atletico and he signed for them just 9 months ago, so nothing concrete at this stage. We will see.”

Any move for Alvarez would come at a premium price, with reports suggesting a fee over £100 million would be required to convince Atletico Madrid to sell – comfortably shattering Liverpool’s current transfer record of £85 million paid for Darwin Nunez.
