Newcastle fans celebrate during the Carabao Cup final

It’s been an emotional few days for Newcastle United fans after the long wait for another major trophy was finally ended on Sunday.

First came the elation of the win, with Liverpool’s late goal in the final setting up a nerve-jangling final 10 minutes after Dan Burn and Alexander Isak had given United a 2-0 lead. Then came the party, the thrill of the celebration and the feeling of the last 70 years of pent-up emotion finally being unleashed as London turned black and white for the night.

Joyous Geordies spilled out of Wembley onto the streets of north London looking to celebrate the win, with strangers hugging each other as if they were lifelong friends. There were plenty of tears too.

No doubt there were a few sore heads on Monday morning, but they were tempered with smiles as wide as the Tyne as fans headed back to the North East.

As the dust settled, though, there was also a time for reflection, to remember those loved ones who were, for whatever reason, absent from the final. Thousands have likely taken a moment or two over the last couple of days and thought ‘they’d have loved it’ about someone who might have been looking down on proceedings with a smile of their own.

All of these feelings were reflected in our cheer map, which allowed Geordies to send their messages of support before the match, and also share some celebratory messages after the trophy was lifted.

“From men to gods, immortalised forever,” said Johnny from Australia, neatly summarising how Newcastle fans feel about their victorious team, with talk of a statue for Eddie Howe.

The word ‘legends’ was unsurprisingly used multiple times by fans, such as Drew, who told the team to ‘walk into Wembley as men, but walk out as legends’.

There were messages of thanks to Howe and his players, who have done the fans so proud.

“So proud to be born and bred a Geordie,” said Ian, who also took a reflective moment to ‘raise a glass to all of the Black and White Lads and Lasses who are no longer with us but loved the Toon unconditionally.’

Some fans were thankful to have watched the winning moment with older family members, whilst others shared fondful memories of being taken to their first game - fans epitomised the deep love they have for United with their messages.
