John Carver fought back the tears while opening up about how much Newcastle United’s cup triumph would have meant for Sir Bobby Robson.
A painful 70 years of domestic hurt came to a joyful end as the Magpies put Liverpool to the sword in the Carabao Cup final. Eddie Howe’s men brushed aside the Premier League leaders to trigger emotional scenes inside Wembley and beyond.
Newcastle now have the monkey off their back after ending one of the most famous trophy droughts in English football. Many legends tried - but all failed to break the hoodoo that many believed had been placed on St James’ Park.
The likes of Kevin Keegan and Robson are revered around Tyneside despite never getting the Magpies over the line. For context, legendary manager Robson - who passed away in 2009 - was 22 when Newcastle last lifted a domestic honour.

Scotland assistant coach Carver worked under Robson throughout his time at United and got teary-eyed when asked what he would have thought about the Carabao Cup win. He told talkSPORT: “Are you trying to get me to cry? Let me tell you, he’d be the proudest man in the world. He’d be sitting up there, watching down… he’d have loved to have done it.
“But you know what? It’s been done now. We already have a statue of Sir Bobby, we’ve got a statue of Alan Shearer, I think there’s one coming soon for Eddie. He deserves it.”
Carver also insisted Newcastle fans deserved their moment more than any other in world football. The 60-year-old believes Sunday’s win could become a catalyst for further success.
“When you think about how long it’s been since we won a domestic trophy, if any football club in the world deserves to win something, it’s our fans,” Carver added. “I’m getting emotional now talking about it. Those people deserve it.
“My friends and family were crying. Grown adults were crying their eyes out - that’s what it means. People say ‘Oh, it’s only the Carabao Cup’ but it’s the start of something. Our fans deserve it.”
