Man United are unlikely to be open to a shock return for on-loan winger Jadon Sancho in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Chelsea have an obligation to buy the Man United star, 24, for £25million when his loan spell comes to an end – but can pay a fee to cancel the deal if they wish.

However, Football Insider has revealed (17 March) Chelsea are certain to sign Sancho if they qualify for next season’s Champions League.

United are keen for the sale of the former Borussia Dortmund star to go through despite sacking Erik ten Hag – who fell out with the winger and was behind his subsequent exit.

Man United want Sancho off the books this summer

Sources say the Red Devils are keen to balance the books by selling Sancho and clear his big wage from the balance sheet at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old is happy to stay at Chelsea and Champions League qualification will virtually confirm his permanent move to Stamford Bridge.

Sancho has made 28 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea this term – notching two goals and six assists.

He spent the second half of last season at Borussia Dortmund on loan before the Blues swooped to take him for the 2024-25 campaign.

The former England star, who cost United around £73million in 2021, is only under contract at Old Trafford until June 2026.

His last Three Lions appearance came in October 2021, with the winger racking up 23 caps in total.

Sancho last played for England under Gareth Southgate in October 2021.

Man United hatch Mainoo exit plan

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (14 March) that Man United would prefer to sell midfielder Kobbie Mainoo abroad if he chooses to leave the club.

Talks are ongoing with the 19-year-old over a new deal but it has been widely reported that he is ready to reject the offer of a new Old Trafford contract and seek a move away.

Chelsea were linked with Mainoo in the January transfer window and it is believed several other Premier League sides are also monitoring his progress.
