Virgil van Dijk's conversation with Paris Saint-Germain chiefs was so that the Dutchman could offer an apology - NOT to discuss a possible transfer. The Liverpool captain was spotted in conversation with the club's sporting director Luis Campos and chairman Nasser Al Khelaifi, following the Reds' Champions League exit to the French side.

Van Dijk is currently set to see his contract at Anfield expire in the summer. The Dutchman has yet to agree a new deal with the Reds, in addition to Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While Van Dijk's talks with the PSG hierarchy were much speculated over, the prospect of a deal has been rubbished. BBC report no negotiations have taken place over a £100million signing-on fee offer, and that talks were instead concerned with the two legs of football that had taken place.

Reports in France add that it was an unplanned conversation, with Van Dijk offering an apology. The former Southampton and Celtix defender was involved in a clash with Campos following the first leg in Paris.

There remains some uncertainty over Van Dijk's future, though the 33-year-old expects to offer an update before the end of the season, but Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has offered his view on the defender's future. And the possibility of a move to the Saudi Pro League appears to have been rejected.

Speaking ahead of Netherlands' Nations League quarter-final clash with Spain, he said: "Whether he signs with Liverpool or another big club, that’s all good for me. We’ll see what happens, and what I understand from Virgil is that he is still looking for the level he is at now."

Van Dijk offered little in the way of tangible hope for Liverpool fans keen to see him extend his deal. The centre-half has reflected there is little reason to panic over his future but appeared to accept that there is a possibility his contract expires.

Virgil van Dijk speaks to the PSG president after the final whistle

"As long as I am calm to you guys then there is no need to panic; Van Dijk said last week. "Whatever may happen in the future. If I was worried you would see me playing a little bit worried and that is not the case. Maybe I will run this fully down and then if there is still no news, I don't know.

"I don't know at this stage (what will happen). But I don't want to create any anxiety or anything like that, I just keep my head down and focus." The Liverpool stalwart also suggested he is clueless how talks will turn out. “I still have no idea at the moment," he said.

"Genuinely, I have no idea at the moment. Talks aren’t on hold, nothing’s on hold. I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are 10 games to go and that’s my full focus.

“If there is news you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes, but that’s about it.
