England international Angel Gomes is wanted by West Ham but the club faces stiff competition from Premier League rivals.

West Ham have offered a contract to Lille midfielder and England international Angel Gomes ahead of the player becoming a free agent this summer in a bid to beat competition from Premier League rivals.

That’s according to The Guardian with the outlet reporting that Graham Potter is a ‘big fan’ of the midfielder and that a contract proposal has been submitted to the player. The proposed wage is said to be £100,000 a week but the report adds that the salary offered will not be high enough for Gomes, who is not set to be short of suitors.

It is claimed that West Ham will not linger on negotiations with the club aware of the transfer race for the player and will look at ‘alternative targets’ should talks with Gomes fall at this early hurdle. The former Manchester United man made the move to Lille in 2020 and was called up to the England senior side by Lee Carsley last year.

West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur battling for Angel Gomes

Over the weekend, it was claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are well in the picture to sign Gomes and have had ‘lengthy conversations’ with the player too, even if those negotiations are not yet at the place of offering a contract. TBR Football had previously claimed that Spurs were ‘pushing hard’ to sign the player with former club Manchester United also interested in a free transfer.

Speaking about Gomes in September, following his call-up to the England squad, caretaker Three Lions boss Lee Carsley said: “Angel is someone who does it week-in, week-out for a team out in France. He is probably different to what we’ve seen in the past in terms of the central midfielder that is a little bit more physical, more robust.

“Angel is very technical, he controls the game with his skill and technique. He is very determined, has an excellent attitude, loves football and technically and tactically he is excellent.”

Postecoglou confident ‘big club’ Spurs can land marquee signings

Should Spurs beat Manchester United and West Ham to the signing of Gomes, it would be the second time the London outfit has done that recently with forward Mathys Tel courted by the Red Devils during the January transfer window too. Postecoglou has backed Tottenham Hotspur to remain an attractive option for the biggest stars, despite recent troubles on the pitch.

He said: "It depends what the players are looking for. You can look at it two ways. OK the league form is not great but there's some pretty big possibilities to have success here in the last three or four months [of the season].

"It's still a big club, it's still a club that can challenge for honours and it's whether the player sees the potential that we see right now, or certainly that I see. If it's too much of a hard sell, it's probably not the right one for us."
