Bringing former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson back into the England national team is 'a great move', believes Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. New Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel made the selection to the surprise of many for World Cup qualifiers vs Latvia and Albania.

Henderson went on to play under Steven Gerrard in Saudi Arabia and now wears the armband for Dutch giants Ajax.

At 34, over this period his role within Gareth Southgate's Three Lions set-up diminished to the point where he was not received a call-up since November 2023.

Whilst there is a plethora of young English talent building their careers in the Premier League, it therefore turned heads when new national team boss Tuchel reverted to the senior man when naming his first England squad last week.

"I’ve known him since the Sunderland days and his desire to want to win and what he has achieved is driven by himself," Everton and Three Lions goalkeeper Pickford responded to The Daily Mail.

"He’s a winner and he’s a big leader. I think bringing Hendo back in is great for the squad.

"For me, having leaders in your group, if you look at the last four major tournaments the teams that have won have all had that experience in their side whether they have played or haven’t played.

"I think it’s a great move for us because of what he has done and how he is still driven, whether he plays or not, he will drive the sessions with the lads."

Despite almost two years since his Anfield exit, Pickford reassured: "He has that winning mentality with what he has won at Liverpool and being captain.

"The more leaders you have around the place will drive training and drive standards around the place and it makes it a better camp for everyone."

The significance of this international break is the start of World Cup 2026 qualifying.

All nations will hope to be named on the new, increased 48-country roster for the finals, which are to be held in the Canada, Mexico and the United States between June through July next year.

Also named in Tuchel's first England selection were Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones whilst fellow internationals Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez miss out through injury.
