Angel Gomes transfer latest as ex-Manchester United star'rejects'offer amid return claim

Angel Gomes of out of contract at Lille this summer

Ex-Manchester United star Angel Gomes has reportedly snubbed a move to West Ham this summer.

The 24-year-old left Old Trafford upon the expiration of his contract in 2020 and joined French team Lille on a free transfer. For these last few years, Gomes has performed consistently in Ligue 1 and earned a call up to the England senior squad for the first time last year.

Talk of a return to United later followed, especially as his contract at Lille is set to expire at the end of the season. There are no signs of a new extension being agreed.

Interest from West Ham has also since emerged as he has struggled for game-time under manager Bruno Genesio this campaign, due in part to injury setbacks.

West Ham have tried to take advantage of his current situation by offering the midfielder a deal worth £100,000-a-week, according to reports from The Guardian.

However, that is understood to not be "high enough" to convince him to move to the London Stadium.

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter is said to be a huge fan of Gomes' game, and wants to alter the dynamic of his midfield. Gomes can also play as a No.6 or No.8 which is an attractive factor for clubs.

Barcelona are also reported to have Gomes on their radar. United, on the other hand, remain admirers of him, and given their current financial situation, it's easy to understand why bringing back a player of his quality - for no cost - is tempting for United.

Former Reds striker Andy Cole reckons Ruben Amorim's side would be boosted by his return.

"Being very honest, I was disappointed to see Angel Gomes leave in the first place," Cole said.

"He's a very talented young man and you're always going to have that type of nonsense where people say that he was too small for the Premier League and all that - but he's moved to France, made a very good career for himself and represented England quite a few times, so fair play to him.

"If that move was to happen, I have no doubts that he'd make Manchester United a better team."
