Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez will be hoping to help the team in the final part of the season
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez should ideally be enjoying a successful season at Anfield. The Reds sit first in the Premier League and have a 12-point lead over second-place Arsenal, with only nine games left to play. However, it has not been a season the Uruguay international will fondly look back upon.
Nunez joined the Reds from Benfica in the summer of 2022 and was considered an exciting signing by many fans. The 25-year-old had already impressed the Anfield faithful when Benfica faced Liverpool for their Champions League quarter-final tie just before Klopp decided to sign the talented striker.
Nunez celebrating his goal against Southampton
The Uruguay international was already on the radar of Jurgen Klopp but after scoring against the English club in the home and away legs, Nunez confirmed how good he was if he was playing with confidence. But it just has not worked out for him at Liverpool and it seems like it has all gone downhill for the No.9.
The struggle in front of goal continues….
It was reported earlier by GIVEMESPORT that Jurgen Klopp was the one who initiated the transfer of Darwin Nunez to Liverpool even when the club’s recruitment team was not sure about the striker. It was believed that the legendary Liverpool manager had a lot of faith in the Uruguay international and was sure he would be an ideal replacement for the outgoing Roberto Firmino.
The ex-Benfica striker repaid the faith shown in him by Klopp in some ways as well. As per Sofascore, Nunez managed to score 33 goals and provide 17 assists in 96 games under the German. But things have gone sour ever since Klopp’s unexpected departure from Anfield.
Arne Slot embracing Darwin Nunez after his penalty miss against PSG
Nunez has just failed to impress new boss Arne Slot this season. The 25-year-old has been nowhere near good enough to lead the line at Anfield and has had some questionable performances in recent weeks. Nunez was also one of the two players to have missed his penalty in the second leg of the Last 16 tie of the Champions Leg against PSG.
Darwin Nunez talks about lack of goals this season
It is been widely reported this year that Darwin Nunez looks set to leave Liverpool in search of pastures new. It looks more and more likely that will happen and Arne Slot will not be missing the young striker that much. As per Sofascore, Nunez has just managed to score seven goals and provide five assists in 40 games in all competitions.
Speaking to ElPais about his lack of form at Liverpool, Nunez said,
“These are moments that one goes through in football, and as I said recently, I’m not someone who throws in the towel because they don’t play, but rather, I’m going to keep working so I can play.”
The Uruguay international added,
“I know I’m not performing as well as I should; it’s difficult because when you’re doing well, like when I came on against PSG, your confidence changes, with the idea of being able to break it in the next match. The ball doesn’t want to go in. ‘Let him run a lot, play well’, and then not be able to score a goal.”

Darwin Nunez has spoken candidly about how he will not give up even though it has been a tough season. The 25-year-old is willing to make things right and help the Reds in the final stretch of the season. Nunez also is aware that his lack of goals is a concerning factor, but if he can just find the confidence in front of goal again then finally, we will get to see why Jurgen Klopp was so adamant about signing the ex-Benfica star.
