The ‘Shape of You’ singer delighted fans at the city's The Dubliner pub as he belted out ‘Galway Girl’ from his 2017 album, Divide, as the crowd sang along.
The four-time Grammy winner appears in a video posted to Instagram on Monday, March 17, which he captioned "Boston for Paddy's day," as he tagged Irish folk band Beoga, while adding: "What a gaff."
He also performed several other songs on Monday night, with fans capturing him singing 2014's ‘Don't’, ‘Nancy Mulligan’ from 2017 and a mashup of 2021's ‘Bad Habits’ and ‘Shivers’.
However, he had earlier teased that he was planning a pop-up performance somewhere in the city locals call Beantown, when he posted: "Meet me in the pub tonight," showing off his Celtics gear and tagging his location in Boston.
The surprise stop in Boston comes just after he visited Nashville, where he also held a pop-up show at a bar, while wearing a pink cowboy hat and New Orleans, where he stepped out of a black SUV in the French Quarter on Saturday morning.
Carrying a portable amp and microphone, he was joined by The Soul Rebels’ brass band as he launched into his new single, ‘Azizam’.
He posted some of the action on his @edhq Instagram account with the caption: “New Orleans had a timeeee today.”
Decked out in a tie-dyed t-shirt and blue pants, the singer told the crowd that quickly gathered that he had never sung the new single live before.
“We’re gonna do one song here – we’re filming a bit of content – and then we’re going to do a parade and walk down and play some songs, if you want to come with us,” Sheeran announced.
“I’ve got a new song coming in a couple weeks that no one’s heard,” he added. “This will be the first time it’s ever been played live. We’ll play it once now and then we’ll walk down, play some songs that you know, and I’ll play this song again. Thanks for coming out. It’s nice to be back here.”
Turning to the Soul Rebels, who recently performed at the Super Bowl opening ceremonies, Sheeran asked, “Shall we give it a whirl?”
He also posted video of the impromptu parade on his @teddysphotos Instagram account with the caption: “Playing some new music today on the streets of New Orleans with @thesoulrebels thanks to everyone who turned up!”
New Orleans fans weren’t the only ones treated to a surprise performance as Sheeran brought down the house in Nashville earlier in the week.
He surprised fans at the legendary Broadway bar Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge when he climbed on top of the bar while sporting a pink cowboy hat.
He then performed a series of his biggest hits alongside a few covers, including Britney Spears’ ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’.
The English singer-songwriter is currently on a break from his years-long Mathematics Tour, which will resume in late April in Qatar.
He hasn't released an album since 2023's Autumn Variations, which reached No 4 on the Billboard 200.
