'I believe'... Carlos Queiroz gives verdict on Ruben Amorim at Man Utd, makes exciting Sir Alex Ferguson comparison

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is finally seeing some improvement from his team after months of struggle.

The 40-year-old head coach has experienced highs and lows through his opening four months of the reign at Old Trafford after arriving from Sporting CP in November 2024.

Ruben Amorim was appointed after Erik ten Hag was sacked for months of underwhelming performances, the sixth permanent boss of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Things have been much better lately for Amorim. In terms of his performance in the Europa League, Amorim has matched Sir Alex’s early European record at United.

There have been many links drawn between Sir Alex and Amorim, with both struggling early days while joining a club in turmoil and far lower than where it should be.

Carlos Queiroz has now been discussing the new United boss while making one comparison to Sir Alex.

Carlos Queiroz shares his thoughts on Ruben Amorim at Manchester United

Amorim will certainly hope recent improvements continue after the international break and he now has the endorsement of Queiroz who made an interesting comparison to Sir Alex.

Speaking to Portuguese outlet, Bola na Rede, Queiroz explained that he sees the current United as similar to the club in 2003/04.

“He will know the paths he has to trace. This moment of Ruben reminds me of the period of decline we went through in the 2003/04 season. Manchester United is a club with very special characteristics and it is a club that has its own culture, with fans of the working class and an environment of this type,” explained Queiroz.

“From what I met as a player because I had the privilege of giving him the first internationalization, I believe he will succeed, but it will not be easy, because the club fell a lot.

“Manchester United, in certain aspects such as in the player selection criteria, has been a constant proof of mistakes. The club confused bringing the best players with making the right choices,” Queiroz slammed, something Sir Jim Ratcliffe has also spoken plenty about.

“I think several great coaches who arrived after Ferguson didn’t realize the genesis of the club and the legacy of the technical past. When Ferguson left it wasn’t a threat, he retired. No coach has to feel this weight or feel threatened. Ruben appeared at a time when reversing this takes time. You will have to win and then lose and then win more and then lose again.”

How Sir Alex Ferguson’s first season compares to Ruben Amorim’s

The comparisons continue between Sir Alex and Amorim as they both took charge in November, with the club struggling and it was not an instant solution.

United ended up finishing 11th in Sir Alex’s first season, 12 points clear of Charlton in the relegation spots.

Under Amorim this season, United are currently 13th but sits 20 points above the drop with 37 points. United are just four points from matching Sir Alex’s first-season finish

With a strong end to the season, United could very easily push into the top 10 and hopefully even win the Europa League which would be a statement from Amorim, to turn the worst season in club history into a feel-good moment.
