Spurs Could Bring Back Familiar Face in Free Agency if Young Guards Don’t Work Out

Moving forward, the San Antonio Spurs have a pretty clear-cut guard rotation. Assuming they don't add to the backcourt in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Spurs will use De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie, and Blake Wesley as their guards. Wesley has recently been given more playing time as a chance to prove himself, and he seems to have found his footing as an end-of-bench guard.

However, if the Spurs deem him too wily and shaky, they could search for a cheap replacement with some veteran experience, and the ideal player could have already been on their roster.

After being traded to the Chicago Bulls in the deal that netted the Spurs Fox, Tre Jones has continued to improve. He was always a solid facilitator and underrated defender, but his scoring--especially his ability to knock down shots from 3-point rage--limited his role on the Spurs.

He did start 48 games for the Silver and Black last season before slotting in behind Chris Paul and Castle this year, but he seemed to take the demotion in stride. He was always an active member of the San Antonio community as well, and it seemed like he and his wife both put down roots in the area.

If the Spurs decide that Wesley is not a long-term option off the bench, Jones will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Spurs will have around $14 million coming off their books this summer, and Jones would likely fit right in that range.

In Chicago, he is playing a bigger role, although the Bulls are a few years behind the Spurs in their rebuild. It would be understandable if he would prefer to amass minutes rather than wins, especially since he's still young for a lead guard, and the Bulls have seen some masterclasses from Jones and might not be eager to see him leave, especially with Lonzo Ball set to his free agency, as well.

For the Spurs, expect Wesley to continue to get more playing time than usual and for a choice to be made regarding their priorities as the offseason draws closer.
