'Different level': Ally McCoist explains the brilliant thing he's noticed about Chelsea's Cole Palmer in games

Chelsea star Cole Palmer continues to do special things on a football pitch to earn him huge praise from all angles.

In his second season as a Chelsea player, Cole Palmer is yet again carrying the burden of the talisman in the Blues squad. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is massively relied upon to create something in the final third of the pitch.

He’s had his first real blip in front of goal recently, failing to score in his previous 10 consecutive appearances across all competitions, but he’s still heavily involved.

He missed the weekend’s Premier League defeat to Arsenal, plus he’s yet to join up with England’s national team during the international break. The results from Palmer’s injury scan are all clear on his hamstring, but he’s having a fresh scan on Wednesday because there is still some discomfort.

Ally McCoist says Cole Palmer’s spatial awareness is off the charts

Ally McCoist has raved about Chelsea star Palmer and his overall ability. In particular, he’s noticed that the English playmaker is a master at receiving possession and finding space on the pitch.

McCoist told talkSPORT: “I’ve looked at him a few times.. Even when the play is at the other end of the pitch, you look at him, and he always has a look before he receives it.

“I look at Foden; I think he receives it as well as anyone on the half-turn; Palmer comes into that category as well. His awareness of space and people around him is a different level.”

In the same video, Gabriel Agbonlahor highlighted that Chelsea’s Palmer is quicker than he looks.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “When he runs, he doesn’t look like he’s sprinting. He’s just gliding past players.”

John Terry shared Palmer won Chelsea’s bleep test very recently when they completed the running drill, winning it by a long way as well. On top of superb technique with the ball at his feet, he’s also got an engine and great stamina.

Cole Palmer vs Phil Foden

In terms of England’s most talented players right now, Palmer and Phil Foden sit right near the very top. Of course, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham speak for themselves as well.

Manchester City attacker Foden, 24, won the PFA Player of the Year in the 2023/24 season after a tremendous year, edging out Palmer to the individual award. However, he’s one of numerous Man City stars to struggle a lot more this term.

Based on this season, Palmer does have the edge over England teammate Foden.
