Newcastle ‘put 14 stars on transfer wish list’ as Eddie Howe prepares for major overhaul

Newcastle United have reportedly compiled a massive transfer wish list ahead of the summer window. Club chiefs can have little doubt that Eddie Howe is the manager to back after Sunday's Carabao Cup victory, which ended the Magpies' 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

Despite their vast riches, PSR limits have forced Newcastle to operate cautiously in recent years. They didn't sign a soul in January, despite selling Miguel Almiron, and Lewis Hall was the only significant first-team addition last summer, when his loan move from Chelsea was made permanent. The Toon are set to reap the rewards of keeping their powder dry, as they have given themselves plenty of wiggle room for the upcoming window.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are drafting up their most ambitious transfer plans since the early days of their Saudi ownership. That is likely to include the signing of a new right-winger, a centre-back, a centre-forward and a goalkeeper.

The same report states that senior figures at St. James' Park have scouted or held discussions about no fewer than 14 specific targets. In the goalkeeper department there is one clear front runner, as personal terms have been agreed with Burnley stopper James Trafford since the summer of 2024.

The 22-year-old remains a major target and he could finally arrive at the end of the season to provide competition for Nick Pope and replace the exit-linked Martin Dubravka.

Among the players reportedly earmarked for the centre-back berth are Marc Guehi, who was the subject of a £65million Newcastle bid last summer, and the Bournemouth duo of Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi.

A whole host of stars have been analysed with a view to boosting Howe's options on the right flank, including Southampton wonderkid Tyler Dibling, Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, PSV Eindhoven ace Johan Bakayoko, Sporting's Francisco Trincao and yet another Bournemouth pairing in Justin Kluivert - son of ex-Newcastle star Patrick - and Antoine Semenyo.

Up top, Howe could be left light as Callum Wilson approaches the end of his contract. And there remains a chance that Alexander Isak could be snapped up if interested clubs are willing to fork out a nine-figure transfer fee.

With both of those things in mind, Magpies chiefs are reportedly keen on Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike and Jonathan David. Lille star David, who has scored 14 league goals this season, will be a free agent in the summer.

Not related to any of Newcastle's four problem positions, but still a player with admirers in the north-east is Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, who completes the list.
