Wolverhampton Wanderers’ next big transfer could already be close to home.
Premier League relegation battlers Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the march to secure their top-flight status for another season in what has been an almighty redemption under new head coach Vitor Pereira.
The Old Gold were 19th in the Premier League when Gary O’Neil was sacked in December but Pereira has since come to the rescue with vital victories over Leicester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, AFC Bournemouth and Southampton enough to create a nine-point buffer to the bottom three.

Wolves haven’t mathematically secured their safety just yet but with the current bottom three sides Leicester, Ipswich Town and Southampton all unable to win any of their last six league outings, a nine-point gap feels sufficient.
If Wanderers are in the top tier for 2025/26, Pereira will be eager to push on and avoid another relegation fight. As much as it may seem unrealistic right now, Wolves aspire to get back into European contention sooner rather than later. Weirder things have happened and the likes of Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Fulham have shown it’s possible with the correct recruitment.
With that possibility in mind, targets are already being chalked up ahead of the summer transfer window. Keeping talisman Matheus Cunha, who has a £62.5 million release clause active from July, would arguably be the best possible business but another big name could help Wanderers rise up the standings.
Wolves could seal mega £55m transfer
In what could be a dramatic turn of events, Wolves are reportedly exploring the possibility of re-signing Dioga Jota from Liverpool five years on from his £45 million departure.

TEAMtalk claims the Wolves hierarchy are seriously considering making an approach this summer as Liverpool are open to selling Jota for £55 million. That may seem too steep of a fee for Wanderers to afford but selling Cunha would fund the move. As would letting fringe players such as Hwang Hee-Chan, Sasa Kalajdzic, Goncalo Guedes depart the club.
Now, we know what you’re thinking, Fosun wouldn’t reinvest after selling up, would they? Well, in all honesty, it’s unlikely, but it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility.
Utilised as more of an impact substitute rather than as a regular starter by Arne Slot this season, Jota could be tempted to return home to regain his star player status. The 28-year-old has played just 1,481 minutes in all competitions this campaign despite impressing with eight goals and three assists across the Premier League and Carabao Cup.
Game time was similar last term as Jota contributed 15 goals and four assists in 32 matches, improving from his seven goals and eight assists in 38 games the season before that. For comparison, his best campaign for Liverpool was in 2021/22 as he scored an impressive 20 goals in 44 appearances.

Wolves fans will remember Jota incredibly fondly for his time at Molineux as he played a significant role in the promotion from the Championship to the Premier League and scored a famous 11-minute hat-trick against Besiktas in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League.
Not only would Jota’s return reinvigorate the fan base and restore at least some faith in the ownership, but it would also add a guaranteed source of goals and creativity. As Cunha has shown this season, having a player capable of regular match-winning moments can change the course of an entire season.
