The Manchester United star has broken out this season under manager Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United boast one of the best youth set-ups in world football as they have produced the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, who both hold a place in Ruben Amorim’s current squad.

The Red Devils head into the international break having won 3-0 against Leicester City last time out. One player who did make an appearance for Amorim’s side is 17-year-old striker Chido Obi-Martin.

The striker came on to replace goal scorer Rasmus Hojlund after the Danish international netted his first goal in 21 games on Sunday. Obi-Martin has become a more regular feature for United this season due to series of injuries at the club.

Obi-Martin rated beneath Arsenal ‘wonderkids’

United signed Obi-Martin from Arsenal’s youth system last autumn after he had built a reputation for being a goal machine for the Gunners’ Under-21s. The 17-year-old joined United’s youth team before making his first team debut in a Premier League game against Tottenham in February. He has since made four appearances for United and has emerged as a real threat up front, something that Amorim’s side have been lacking as of late.

However, despite this, Obi-Martin has been ranked just 50th on the annual NXGN Top 50 of the best teenage ‘wonderkids’ in world football. Obi-Martin was ranked 50th in the list, despite appearing in the Premier League, and having one of the best scoring records at youth level.

He’s netted 44 career goals in 42 appearances for both Arsenal’s youth teams, United’s youth teams and the first team, in what makes for exciting reading. Despite that, Arsenal left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly ranked eighth in the top 50, after he broke out into Mikel Arteta’s side this season.

He has also received his first England call-up by Thomas Tuchel to replace the likes of Luke Shaw and Lewis Hall, both of whom are injured for the March international break.

Furthermore, Arsenal winger Ethan Nwaneri was ranked sixth in the list, well ahead of Obi-Martin. The 17-year-old didn’t receive a call-up but has made 19 Premier League appearances for the Gunners this season, filling in for the injured Bukayo Saka.

United’s missed transfer target ranks above Obi-Martin

The Red Devils were linked to Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda over the past few weeks. He has made 26 league appearances, scoring one goal and contributing four assists for Amorim’s former team. Manchester World understood there to be genuine interest in the player.

United reportedly wanted to sign the 17-year-old to reunite him with Amorim, but instead, Chelsea swooped in and signed the winger, who is expected to cost the Blues around £40m.

He will move to Stamford Bridge in 2026, and will remain a Sporting CP player until that point. Quenda was ranked 11th in the top 50 list, he is comfortable playing on either wing, and could become a future star in the Premier League, a real missed opportunity for Amorim and United.

In other news, a 99-game Man United star has hinted at his summer exit with his contract due to expire in June.
