Fabrizio Romano has provided a telling update on the future of Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.
It is no longer news that Nunez is one of the few players Liverpool could potentially offload this season.
The 2024/2025 season has proven to be another frustrating chapter in the Uruguay international’s Liverpool career.
Despite his £85m price tag, the striker has managed just seven goals and five assists across all competitions. His struggle for consistent playing time is evident, with only 16 starts from his 35 appearances and 23 matches as a substitute.
The statistical underperformance is concerning for a player of Nunez’s calibre and price tag, and Liverpool is said to be willing to cut their losses and sanction a deal for his departure this summer.
Atletico Madrid are one of the clubs interested in signing him. The Spanish club are reportedly interested in signing him in a €40m deal, while clubs in Saudi Arabia are also interested.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now provided insight into the forward’s future amid interest from European and Saudi Arabia clubs.
Speaking in his latest episode of the Here We Go podcast on YouTube, Romano revealed that Nunez’s representatives are already holding discussions about a possible Liverpool exit this summer.
“For sure, I told you several times that I expect Darwin Nunez to be one of the names to watch in the summer,” he said.
“There is movement. Movement has already started around Darwin Nunez, who is now in an important moment of the season with Liverpool. They are focusing on winning the Premier League title. That’s the mission for Nunez. Win the Premier League and then consider a move in the summer.
“Because Darwin, according to my information, was very open already in January to joining Al Nassr. He was ready to say yes to Saudi. He was ready to say yes to the project.
“Then Liverpool decided to keep the current squad, not to change anything. Also, because in January there was no player available in terms of their own transfer target. Yes, they had a list for the summer, but those players were not available in January. So Liverpool decided against investing money in a player they didn’t trust 100% and to wait until the summer transfer window.
“Now let’s see what happens with Darwin. European clubs, Saudi clubs, and more (are interested). There will be movement. My sources keep telling me that the expectation is for Darwin to leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window. There is already some movement with the people close to the player exploring all the possibilities.
“Let me mention that Darwin is super professional working hard to help Liverpool win the Premier League title.”
