Mikel Merino has disclosed that his Arsenal teammates have been seeking his insights on Real Madrid ahead of their highly anticipated Champions League quarter-final showdown next month.
The Gunners will face the reigning European champions in a blockbuster tie, with the first leg set to take place at the Emirates Stadium on April 8. Real Madrid, who have lifted the Champions League trophy a record 15 times, are considered favorites, but Arsenal are eager to pull off an upset.
Having spent the past six years playing against Los Blancos with Real Sociedad, Merino has a wealth of experience facing Madrid, and his Arsenal colleagues have been eager to tap into his knowledge.
“They ask me what the stadium is like, what the atmosphere is like, and if the aura surrounding Real Madrid in the Champions League—especially their famous comebacks—is true,” Merino told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

“And of course, when [Real Madrid] have done it so many times, that’s the image people have of them.
“Talking about favorites is very difficult because the Champions League shows that small details make the difference. There are three or four teams that can be considered favorites, but you can’t just pick one.”

The 28-year-old has been deployed as an emergency striker for Arsenal due to injuries in the squad and has impressed in his new role, scoring four goals in seven appearances. However, he is expected to return to his natural midfield position after being called up by Spain for their Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands this week.

“That question is more for [Spain head coach] Luis de la Fuente,” Merino said. “I think I’ll focus more on my natural position.
“He’s bringing forwards that he trusts and who are at a very high level. It makes sense that if he brings me in, it’ll be to play in my usual role.”
Reflecting on his transition to Arsenal after leaving Real Sociedad, Merino admitted he is feeling increasingly comfortable in North London.
“I feel more settled in the team, in the squad, in the city, and in the environment—even with the staff,” he said. “It’s a big change after six or seven years with the same people around me.
“On a personal level, it’s been different and special. Now, I’m playing in a slightly different position, and as a group, we’re still fighting in the league, trying to make up points, and we have a very exciting Champions League tie ahead.”
